What is the Midheaven (MC) in astrology?

A time-sensitive chart angle, not a job assignment.

Short answer

The Midheaven, or MC, is the upper intersection of the local meridian and the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path. It is a chart angle, not a planet. Astrologers associate it with public roles and visibility. It needs a reliable birth time and place, and it is not necessarily the tenth-house cusp in an equal-house chart.

What the MC measures

The local meridian is the north-south line through the point overhead. The ecliptic is the Sun's apparent path through the sky. Their upper intersection defines the Midheaven. The opposite point is the IC, short for Imum Coeli.

The MC is not simply the point directly above your head, called the zenith. It is a zodiac degree calculated for a specific time and location. Its sign is the zodiac sign containing that degree.

What astrologers read into it

In astrology, the MC is often associated with public standing, visibility, and roles other people recognise. Those themes may include paid work, but they are not limited to a job title. They can also describe a public contribution or responsibility.

The sign, its ruler, and aspects may add symbolic detail. They cannot tell you which profession to choose or prove that you will become well known. Actual interests, skills, circumstances, and choices matter outside the chart.

The MC and tenth house are not always the same

In quadrant systems such as Placidus, the MC marks the tenth-house cusp. In equal houses measured from the Ascendant, each house begins 30° after the previous one. The MC is calculated separately and can fall away from that tenth-house boundary.

Astral Meridian uses equal houses when birth time is available. Read the MC angle and the tenth-house cusp as distinct chart facts. A tenth-house planet is not automatically conjunct the MC, and the two points need not have the same sign.

Why birth time and place matter

As Earth turns, the meridian meets different zodiac degrees. A guessed time can change the MC sign, its exact degree, and aspects to it. A birth date alone cannot establish it.

When birth time is unknown, Astral Meridian withholds the MC and other angles. Its angle calculation also clamps latitude to 66° north or south, so angles for higher-latitude locations are approximate. Keep those data limits separate from the interpretation.

What this can and cannot say

MC interpretation requires a reliable birth time and place. Higher-latitude angles are approximate under Astral Meridian's latitude limit. The MC is not necessarily the equal-house tenth cusp, and neither point proves a career path, success, status, or any future outcome.

An angle is not a career verdict

For a hypothetical Gemini MC, a reader might use communication or variety as a public-role theme. It does not mean the person must write, teach, or work in media. In an equal-house chart, check the separate tenth-house cusp rather than assuming it is also Gemini.

Frequently asked questions

What does MC stand for?
MC stands for Medium Coeli, commonly called the Midheaven. It is a chart angle calculated from the local meridian and ecliptic.
Is the Midheaven always the tenth-house cusp?
No. It is the tenth cusp in quadrant systems such as Placidus. Astral Meridian uses equal houses from the Ascendant, where the MC is a separate angle and may fall elsewhere.
Can my MC tell me what job to choose?
No. Astrologers may use it for symbolic reflection on public roles, but it is not career or financial advice. Your skills, interests, and circumstances need their own consideration.
