Short answer
Aspects are angular relationships between planets or chart points. The five major aspects are the conjunction at 0°, sextile at 60°, square at 90°, trine at 120°, and opposition at 180°. An orb is the allowed distance from the exact angle. The angle can be measured; the meaning attached to it is astrological interpretation.
What an aspect measures
In a standard natal chart, an aspect compares positions along the zodiac circle. It is not the physical distance between planets in space. Two placements separated by a quarter of the circle are 90° apart, even if the planets are very far from each other.
Astrologers read the linked planets together. Mercury and Saturn, for example, combine symbols for thought and limits. The aspect describes the kind of relationship being interpreted, not a force proven to cause behaviour.
The five major aspects
A conjunction is 0°: the placements are together in zodiac longitude. A sextile is 60°, and a trine is 120°. Astrologers often read these as a blending of themes or an easier exchange, depending on the planets involved.
A square is 90°, and an opposition is 180°. These are often read as friction or competing demands. They are not automatically bad. An easy aspect does not promise success, and a tense aspect does not predict failure.
What an orb means
An orb is the gap between the measured angle and an exact aspect. If two planets are 87° apart, they are 3° from an exact 90° square. A calculator using an allowance of at least 3° for that contact may list it as a square.
Orb allowances differ by astrologer, calculator, aspect, and planet. There is no single universal cutoff. A tighter orb means a closer geometric match, not a more certain life outcome. When comparing charts from different sites, check their orb settings.
Start with one clear contact
Choose one close major aspect. Name the two planets, the angle, and the orb. Then explain each planet's symbolic role in plain words. Add signs or houses only when the data supports them.
The Moon's degree changes quickly, so unknown birth time can make its aspects uncertain. Aspects to the Ascendant or Midheaven need a reliable time and place. Do not treat a contact to a guessed angle as a confirmed chart fact.
What this can and cannot say
Aspect angles are chart measurements. Their personality and timing meanings are symbolic interpretations. Neither a close orb nor a tense aspect proves an event will happen. Unknown birth time limits Moon contacts and rules out reliable aspects to angles.
An 87° contact
Imagine Mercury and Saturn are 87° apart. That is a square with a 3° orb under a setting that includes it. A plain symbolic reading might notice a tension between speaking freely and checking every detail. It should not diagnose a communication problem or predict a setback.
Sources and method
Linked sources support the factual claims identified in each section. They do not establish or validate the symbolic interpretations, which are presented as reflection.

Frequently asked questions
- What is an orb in astrology?
- It is the allowed deviation from an exact aspect angle. A contact 87° apart is 3° away from a 90° square. Whether it is included depends on the orb settings.
- Are squares and oppositions bad?
- No. Astrologers often use them to describe friction or competing themes. They do not prove harm, failure, or a fixed problem.
- Why do chart calculators show different aspects?
- They may use different orb allowances or include different planets and points. Time-sensitive positions can also differ when the birth data is uncertain.
